STUDENT & SOCIAL MEDIA

Man is making progress so rapidly that today, world is known as “Global Village” as everyone can talk to each other in everywhere in the world. As world is making progress day by day, people have become more busy even they cannot spend some time with their friends, family members and their beloved ones. This awkward situation urged man to create such an environment where they can interact with their beloved ones. Social media is the only one which has given relief to man from this awkward situation. The main thing in our lives is the interaction with the people and without social media, it is very difficult task for the students as well to attend every ceremony of their relatives.
This is a general fact that whenever a new invention comes, it is appreciated as well as criticized by some people. Social media is also an invention of science and technology and we know that every invention of science has both positive and negative aspects. Some people say that social media is useless and it is wasting their precious time especially of their teenagers. No doubt every innovation can have harmful effects but if one realizes its importance, he/she will definitely use it for good purposes. The same thing is told by William Shakespeare, “There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so”. We can interpret this by using an example of our daily life. If someone is travelling a car and he hits a man, then who is responsible for this accident, either a car or a driver? The answer is simple, driver. So it is the need of hour that we should realize and understand that how much important social media is, especially for the young generation.
Social media has become a vital part of our daily life and no one can disprove it. The most commonly used sources for social media includes Facebook, Messenger, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin, Pinterest, My Space, Snapchat, etc. These websites are widely used by different people to interact with each other. It is reported that more than 100000000 users are registered on social media. Now even illiterate people are widely using these websites. Social media not only interact people but also provides entertainment. That’s why students especially our young generation is diverted more towards these sites. They spend more time on social media than their studies, the result is that they cannot score high marks. We know that this is an innovation for the students as it also provides entertainment and fun and they are more curious about it. Research has found that 71% of teenagers have Facebook account and over 60% of 13-17 years olds have at least one profile and each spend more than 2 hours. This is astonishing for us but we should aware them of its pros and cons.
This is horrible that most of our young generation is affecting by vulnerable incidents happening on social media and we are doing nothing for them. Some people are harming young teenager’s minds. Bullies, torment, threat, harass and even embarrass their victims by using different forms of social media. People may provide their personal information so their privacy is not secured. “Cyber bullying is quite common, can cause to any young person online and can cause profound psychological outcomes including depression, anxiety, severe isolation and tragically suicide” (American Academy of Pediatrics). But it does not mean that one should cut off him/herself from social media. Despite the fact that social media has harmful effects, there are many important features of social media which are playing important role in our daily life especially for the students. Now universities have their own webpages on social media and they convey information to the students in a few seconds. Many non-profit organizations are working on social media for the benefits of people. Future Pakistan Team is one of them. They are working day and night for the upcoming generation to show their talent and skills and give them awareness as well. Every institute has its own webpage to facilitate their workers.
It is interesting for the students who cannot afford their educational expenses that many scholarships are available on social media. Pakistan Science Foundation is one of the famous institute who launched Science Talent Farming Scheme for the deserving students. They have their own webpage to facilitate the students. Students should realize the importance of social media and its role in the society. They should spend their extra efforts for the betterment of their nation. Many sites are available on social media for social work, they may become part of them as volunteers. Taking everything into consideration, we may say that if students realize the importance of social media, the day is not far when they will be leading the other nations.
